Indie Edge May 2016: Tim Seeley

Article Image 9fecPlease tell us a bit about yourself!

I'm Tim Seeley. I'm a writer and artist. I originally hail from central Wisconsin and I live in Chicago. I'm probably most known for Hack/Slash, Revival, Halloween, various Deadpool stories, and DC’s Nightwing.

What movie-themed title are you currently working on?

I'm doing Oblivion, a comic book 'sequel' to the Full Moon Studios film, published by Action Lab, with artist Romina Moranelli. It's about Lyz Azorr, the daughter of interstellar criminal Red Eye, as she's drawn to a backwater town on a barely hospitable planet called Oblivion, in search of her father's lost treasure. While on her quest, she runs into the cast of characters from the film, including good guys like Marshall Stone, Buteo, Stell Barr and Doc, as well as the best of the villains, including the lovely Lash. All the while she's pursued by an obsessed bounty hunter named Skruk Morgus.

What aspect of this movie franchise do you believe translates best to a sequential art?

Oblivion is pure “comic book”. One: It was originally written by comic book writer Peter David. Two: Its wit and charm lends itself well to the comic book page. And Three: In comics, we're able to give Oblivion the unlimited special effects budget it couldn't have as a film. I first saw Oblivion when I was in high school… probably right around the time I got my first video store membership and could rent movies on my own. I'd gotten a “Better Red Than Dead” button as a promotional giveaway that year, and my interests were piqued. The movie hit me in all the right ways... it's funny, it's dark, it's weird, it's sexy, and it's totally original. Man, I really wish I could find that button!

What are your favorite movie-themed projects you’ve read to over the past decade?

I can be a little hesitant about film-to-comic adaptations, and the other way around, since it seems like so many people don't bother to recognize what works best in each medium, and try to shoehorn storytelling techniques from one medium into the other. But when done right, I've always enjoyed the horror/sci-fi adaptations... I think Predator and Aliens make for great comics, and I'm always down for comics of Freddy, Jason, Ash and the Army of Darkness, Michael Myers and Puppet Master.
