Staff Picks (January): Independence Day #1
Dec 16, 2015
On July 3rd 1996 American film audiences were introduced to the most action packed movie to ever feature a US President flying a fighter jet and blasting extra-terrestrials out of the sky with missiles. While that might not be very large film genre the movie was a massive commercial success opening at over $50 million and ultimately grossing just over $306 million by January 12th 1997.
The movie featured Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Will Smith, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner. Together they had to face one of the most gruesome alien invasions ever put to the silver screen. This time the aliens didn’t care at all about us. E.T. didn’t want to go home and there were no aliens trying to coax willing humans onto their spaceships to fatten them up and then trick them by turning them into a tasty snack on the way back to their home planet. This time the aliens only wanted one thing from us and it wasn’t “to serve man”. They wanted us to die.
President Whitmore, played by Bill Pullman, wasn’t going to have any of that. In one of the most inspiring speeches given in a science fiction movie the President rallied his fighter pilots and together with Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith they saved the world.
Now in March 2016 they’ll have to do it all over again. The aliens are back and need killing all over again. Be sure to pick up Independence Day #1 from Titan Comics written by Victor Gischler (Deadpool Corps, Sally of the Wasteland) and artist Dennis Calero (Cowboys & Aliens).
