Staff Picks (November): Graveyard Quest
Oct 21, 2015
Father and son, rebellion and revenge, good shovels and better advice—Graveyard Quest races along after an adorable-horrible little gravedigger as he chases his stolen treasure: his mother’s earthly remains. That’s right. Somebody stole mom’s bones and took’em to hell. Frankly, our gravedigger friend is the obsessive sort (as you may have guessed from the fact that he has yet to bury his mom) and he will not let this go! With minimal preparation, but an overwhelming supply of desperation, he descends into the underworld where no one and nothing can stop him—not even his dead dad.
KC Green, famous for his 6 years making the GUNSHOW webcomic, is no stranger to dark humor and elastic character design. His style blends Looney Tunes’ rubber-faced outtakes, Hanna Barbara’s thick-line style, and the visceral, emotional intensity of John K’s Ren & Stimpy Show into an artistic presentation that’s both familiar and fresh. Graveyard Quest is very much a story about family, about fear of loss and loneliness, and about breaking away from our obsessions long enough to quit being jerks. It’s also about the kindness of moles, the politics of demons, and the importance of a good shovel, so you know this is a choice comic.
