Staff Picks (November): Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0

BOOM! Studios does Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Enough said! As a literal life-long fan of the series—specifically MMPR—I can’t be more excited about the new ongoing series starting with issue #0 in this catalog.

This is definitely a tough project to take on with the original series ending a decade ago, and serious fans’ expectations high. Original viewers have grown up, their tastes have matured, and like so many other projects that try to capitalize on our childhood nostalgia, a series bringing back the team of six could potentially fall flat with a dry, verbatim recapturing of the Power Rangers adventures. But this is the glorious thing about the new series from BOOM!; it just doesn’t.

In fact, reading the first few pages I not only got my nostalgia fix, but the story was more substantial—a fresh and new take on the classic characters. Yes, the story was from my childhood—picking up right up from when Tommy (the Green Ranger) joins the side of good after breaking the spell the evil Rita had over him forcing him to try and destroy the Power Rangers—but the writing and art was what we have come to love about comics on the shelves today. The comic satisfied my inner ten-year-old, but with solid storytelling and art it also won over my twenty-something-year-old comics craving.

This is going to be a series that is perfect for new and old comic readers of all ages AND life-long fans! If you give any comic a shot this month, I couldn’t recommend Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0 from BOOM! Studios more. You are in for a real treat!
