Staff Picks (September): Sky Doll Decade GN
Aug 19, 2015
Fans of Blade Runner, The Fifth Element, and old-school 2-D animation, rejoice! Classically-trained Disney illustrators and artists Barbara Canepa & Alessandro Barbucci have brought their independent sci-fi space opera graphic novel to Titan Comics!
A rocket-romp across planets and satellites, Sky Doll tells a tale of ethics, religion, and adult toys. We flee across the stars with Noa, an android built for pleasure, and two, at times, devout missionaries. In pursuit are both factions of a warring church, seeking to either enshrine/enslave or destroy/discredit Noa, who, despite being a wind-up lady-of-the-night, keeps performing public miracles. The trio are continually tested in friendship and in character: no portion of their religious or secular prior experiences has prepared them for the split-second decisions they face.
Sky Doll is a thrilling read and easily satisfies the tech & fantasy reader, and it invites re-reading and consideration as well. Not just a sexy-sparky story, Sky Doll, like Noa herself, yearns to make a deeper point, to open further discussion, and to bring thought to bear on a spiritual topic that deserves examination.
