Staff Picks (February): Rick and Morty #1

Remember that movie Back to the Future? Well, now imagine following the adventures of Doc Brown and Marty McFly in a less wholesome light: Doc as a drunk, foul-mouthed mad genius grandfather and Marty as his soft-spoken, easily impressionable, and curious 14 year-old grandson. This unlikely pair is not just going on zany scientific adventures to right the wrongs of their time-traveling. This is the rough idea behind one of Adult Swim's newest animated shows Rick and Morty, and if you aren't familiar with this show, I would seriously suggest checking it out. I'm going to go further too and say that I would also strongly suggest checking out Oni Press's newest comic series based on the show, coming out this April!

What sets this series apart from a lot of the comics that I have recently read is that it is truly hilarious! No, seriously, it's a laugh-out-loud kind of dark comedy that does real justice to the original vision that Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland had for the show. Zac Gorman's (Costume Quest) writing is witty, clever, and a testament to solid storytelling that just flows from scene-to-scene, wit-to-wit unforced and flawlessly. Not to mention CJ Cannon's art captures the fast-paced energy that matches the pace of the narrative perfectly and in a way that any fans of the show are going to be looking for.

I could go on for days about this series. Needless to say, I think that it is one of the cleverest comedies to have come out in a good long while. Instead of ranting though, and you possibly waiting on the sidelines for other fans to tell you how good it is, just go pick up the first issue yourself. Wubba-lubba-dub-dub!
