Staff Picks (December): CURB STOMP #1
Nov 19, 2014
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
If you don’t know what a “curb stomp” is then I suggest watching the film American History X (one of many reasons to see this) or cut right to the chase and look it up online so you’ll know what to expect going into BOOM!’s newest “punk-alyptic” series.
Punk music meets gang-on-gang violence in a fictional town where the all-female gang known as The Fever fight to keep their elected turf from the other three rival gangs. One night, the unstable peace between all four gangs is suddenly broken in a sudden, violent act that sets in motion an all-out war between the gangs and the city set between them. With tensions high and fingers pointing among the clans, Machete Betty and the other members of The Fever face danger and death in the name of survival.
With an 80’s color palate and punk sensibility, Curb Stomp is a hybrid between Phonogram’s musical reverence and artist, Ryan Kelly’s female-focused work (if it had more bloodshed). For you movie lovers out there; think The Warriors if it took place in underground music clubs and involved less costumes. Curious yet? You should be.
