Like most, the first comics I was exposed to were of the capes and tights variety and for a long time they were all that I read. But as my tastes evolved I quickly found that my favorite comics are really the gritty crime noir types, there’s just something about the comics medium that perfectly captures the storytelling beats and rhythms of the genre. So, while I firmly classify myself as a fan of almost all comics, I’m an absolute nut for a solid crime noir yarn.
I’m happy to say that now is a great time to be a fan these gritty noir comic tales because there are some great options on the stands – from Brubaker and Phillips Fatale to the hotly anticipated next volume in Archaia’s Killer series. This September BOOM! launches another great option for crime enthusiasts with Bryce Carlson’s Hit. Carlson’s crafted a great period book that oozes noir sensibilities, beginning with a brutal opening sequence that quickly sets the tone for the entire issue. By the end of this first chapter two things are clear, in Carlson’s LA there are no rules and no one is safe; and yet I can’t wait to get back there and see what happens next.
