Staff Picks (January 13): Fanny & Romeo
Dec 14, 2012
Publisher: Conundrum Press
The best and most interesting portraits of troubled relationships are the ones that understand both parties can mean well and behave badly. Fanny & Romeo injects this formula with a shot of gentle absurdity by creating a love triangle between a commitment-phobic realtor, his dependent designer girlfriend, and a cat.
Fanny loves Romeo the cat but Fabien is severely allergic. Before long they’re having blow-out fights, and their childish “solutions” to the ongoing argument—he kidnaps the cat, she rents it a separate apartment—just add fuel to the fire. The escalating situation is hilarious and a bit painful for anyone who’s been angry enough to do truly ridiculous things. As Fabien and Fanny push each other away, they’re faced with the ludicrous possibility that this may be the end of their relationship.
Fanny & Romeo is a fair and funny addition to the halls of the compassionate he-said, she-said. It’s a story about how our trivial fights are actually about big issues, and how love can surprise us in strange ways.
