The Killer is the best crime fiction story you haven’t read yet. If you’re a fan of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Criminal and haven’t jumped on board the Matz/Jacamon bandwagon I recommend you do so immediately. Much like Brubaker and Phillips, both creators are stellar when working independently of one another, but together they become a true force to be reckoned with.

This omnibus collection of the first two volumes of The Killer introduces the unnamed assassin who’s as cold and calculating as any protagonist in recent memory. He exudes the kind of coolness that’s one part James Bond, two parts Leon from The Professional, with a pinch of Michael Madsen’s character from Reservoir Dogs thrown in for good measure. The character only becomes more compelling with each story the creators tell, and I eagerly anticipate new installments to the series. For now though, there should be just enough material here to whet readers’ appetites to pick up volume 3, which is also currently available from Archaia.
