Injection of Rejection Because Humanity Isn't Worth It

by Vince Brusio

What would you do if you found out powers-that-be had pulled the switch on your life without caring what you think? Here is science gone very wrong, and in this interview with Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey, it appears that Injection #1 (MAR150468) is going to hurt quite a bit, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Article Image e37dPREVIEWSworld: If we were so lucky as to step into a DeLorean time machine, what past events occurred that started the chain reaction leading up to Injection #1?

Warren Ellis: A few years back, there was a public/private think tank called the Cross-Cultural Contamination Unit, which was made up of five eccentric geniuses from five different fields, and, through fatal early-21st-Century jadedness, they did something terrible to the world. And very few people have really noticed what that was, yet.  But they're starting to.  And our five crazy people are trying to staunch the wound before anyone else finds out.

Declan Shalvey: Why would you want a DeLorean unless you wanted to STOP the chain reaction.....? What do you have against us collaborating PREVIEWSworld!?!

In all seriousness, think Warren and I just had a painless, dare-I-say-enjoyable collaboration on Moon Knight at Marvel. He asked if I'd be interested in working on a creator-owned project at a time when I was realising it was something I had to do sooner, rather than later. When doing work-for-hire projects, other things tend to go on the slow burner. After the success and creative control I had on Moon Knight, I felt the time was right for creator-owned and as it happened, Warren asked.

PREVIEWSworld: Please describe for us the current chaosphere landscape that is Injection. What no-go zones should we avoid? And should we wear protective radiation suits?

Article Image afd8Warren Ellis: Oh, it's everywhere. We're all screwed. It's in the internet. It's somehow seeded into folklore and archaeology. It's everything. It's a weapon, an operating system, a disease, a behavioral pattern, an opportunity and a storm. They invented something that worked itself into the fabric of the world.  Why?  What for?  We'll find out by the end of the first book, mostly. All you need to know right now is that the Injection has broken the system of the world, and things are getting weirder, much faster than they should be.

PREVIEWSworld: The players here that give us Injection have worked together previously on Moon Knight. What came from that synergy that helped the creative process for Injection? Can we get a peek into the camaraderie? Any stories to tell?

Article Image 46b4Warren Ellis: Comics aren't really that rock-and-roll. Though I think I'm supposed to be in Dublin in mid-May, after I get back from a conference in Berlin, so if I do that and, as planned, get Dec and Jordie so drunk that they cannot see, then there should be some stories. Moon Knight, really, was all three of us learning how to work together and learning what each of us like to do. So my job, every month, is to create the environment and freedom for Dec and Jordie to have fun and make something they're proud of, while I sit back, watch in amazement, and then take the credit because I'm a terrible person.  It's great.

Article Image a7ddDeclan Shalvey: Well I for one, welcome Warren's bold plan of blinding both myself and Jordie.

When I took the Moon Knight gig, I did it for the opportunity to work with Warren, and to try do something new and interesting, making bolder decisions about my work with my not-so-secret-weapon of Jordie Bellaire to back me up.

As it turned out, it was the most rewarding project I've ever worked on and I didn't want it to stop. With Injection, I have all that and so much more.

I get to build a world that is mine, where anything is possible.... and ride Warren's coat tails as far as they'll take me!
