Kelly Sue DeConnick: A Deadly Marvel On Her Own Planet

Article Image 1a3bEvery once in a while, we meet a creator who lets it all hang out. And by that we mean the conversation goes … old school! Off come the masks. The shared idea becomes: let’s roll with this! Turn the volume up to "11." The adrenaline kicks into overdrive, the stage directions are discarded, and the need for speed is all that matters. Both parties involved hold onto the rollercoaster bar for dear life because as topics fly for conversation you forget where the ride started, or where it’s going to end.  Just hold on. It's the ride that matters.

Such was the ride we had when we talked with the live grenade that is Kelly Sue DeConnick! The fiery redhead writer who is chugging away on multiple titles for multiple publishers was able to meet with us last minute on a Friday evening at New York Comic Con, and we had a ball talking to her about the new books she’s making that are filling up comic shops everywhere.

Pretty Deadly’s (FEB140533) going great!” she said. “We started working on the second arc. The plan for that is we’re going to do an arc a year for four years…and then I get to work on things in between.”

And working on things “in between” is what Kelly Sue has mastered.  She’s quite adept at maneuvering, and would undoubtedly give anyone a hard time if they got in the ring with her, because life can be one big WWE match for Kelly when she gets rolling.

“Yes, my hard-headed strong-willed daughter is a little bit of an inspiration! I’m having a great time with Captain Marvel. She’s still in space, and we’re bringing back Lila Cheney!”

Space is also the frontier for Kelly’s Bitch Planet (OCT140578), which does not pull punches, and does not pretend to be for everyone as its based on movies back in the day that didn't sugar coat morality.

“It’s a sci-fi exploitation riff. Women in prison. Val (De Landro) calls this the kidney-punching book. I loved those exploitation movies when I was a kid. Loved them! We’re reframing and exploring some of the thinking and reasoning behind all of that. So it’s exploitation without being exploitive.”

To get the goods on what Kelly has planned throughout the year, check out the above PREVIEWSworld YouTube video and hear the lady roll off what keeps her busy this year, and the next!
