Chris Ryall’s plate is full on any given day of the week. He’s the Chief Creative Office and Editor-In-Chief for IDW Publishing, so any book that goes out the door has to be seen by him, and has to have his seal of approval. For that reason, we thought it best to speak to the man himself to get the scoop on what looks like to be one smoking hot horror book! Ever hear about Tales From the Darkside? If not, you're about to be educated in the tactics of terror, courtesy of our exclusive interview with Chris.

Tales From The Darkside HC (NOV160507) is available to pre-order from the November PREVIEWS catalog.

Vince Brusio: So what brought about the idea of bringing Tales From The Darkside #1 (APR160563) to IDW Publishing? Will this series re-imagine Tales From the Darkside? What tune-up or body work will be done to make it an IDW comic?

Chris Ryall: Well, the tuning was entirely done by Joe Hill before this ever became a comic, actually. Joe was hired to re-imagine the show for television and — as seems to be Joe’s lot in life thus far — a pilot was shot, and then not picked up for series. But the network was nice enough to allow the scripts Joe wrote — three in all — to be turned into comics in the form of our four-issue series. We’ll also separately be releasing the teleplays themselves in a nice edition with spot illustrations added by Darkside variant cover artist (and Joe’s Wraith co-conspirator) Charles Paul Wilson III.

Vince Brusio: Why were Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez tapped for this project?

Chris Ryall:  As I mentioned above, Joe was the writer of the teleplays, and as soon as we had a chance to turn them into comic scripts, pairing Joe’s material with his award-winning partner on Locke & Key made perfect sense to us. People have been asking for more Joe and Gabriel collaborations, and we’re very happy to have this one as answer to their question of when they’d pair up again.

Vince Brusio: This is described as a four-issue series, yet there are three stories alluded to in the PREVIEWS April solicitation. Does this mean that three stories are stretched evenly over four issues, or will there be additional material featured in the books?

Chris Ryall: The second script, “The Black Box,” is the longer script, and the centerpiece of our four-issue series, so that one stretches across issues 2 and 3. Issues 1 and 4 are stand-alone stories.

Vince Brusio: Have you seen any of the pages for this book yet? What are your impressions of the work so far, and what have you seen or read at the office that's fired up your inner geek?

Chris Ryall: I’ve seen all of issue 1 now, with Gabriel and colorist Ryan Hill delivering some amazing work on that first issue. Gabe’s covers for the first two, and cover design for all four (they’re all of a similar theme) are done now, as well as Charles Paul Wilson III’s great variant cover for #1. And the work all looks just as good as people have come to expect from the creators of Locke & Key and Wraith.
