DC's iZombie Rises on The CW
Mar 23, 2015
The offbeat undead detective series from DC Comics/Vertigo boasted solid ratings on the small screen when it premiered last week. With 2.3 million overall viewers tuning in after The Flash, now is the perfect time to start reading the collections from the Chris Roberson and Mike Allred series that inspired the new show!
Executive produced by Rob Thomas of Veronica Mars fame, the series presents a new twist on the familar hungry ghoul genre. Gwendolyn "Gwen" Dylan is a 20-something gravedigger in an eco-friendly cemetery. Once a month she must eat a human brain to keep from losing her own memories, but in the process she becomes consumed with the thoughts and personality of the dead person -- until she eats her next brain. Gwen sets out to fulfill the dead person's last request, solve a crime or right a wrong, which makes her a unique asset to the local homicide division as she's "Kicking Ass and Taking Brains."
The four volumes of DC Comics' iZombie graphic novels collect the entire run of the series, in which our zombie girl detective is joined by her best friend, Eleanor (who happens to be a swinging '60s ghost), a posse of paintball-blasting vampires, a smitten were-dog and a hot but demented mummy, making the title irresistible for those who want more undead detective action, or for readers who appreciate a fresh take on the genre from writer Chris Roberson (Superman, Memorial) and artist Mike Allred (Madman, X-Statix).
