The top comic book news story for 2015 was:

Hmm…impossible for me to say with absolute certainty, but I’ll go with the announcement of Dark Knight III. A huge story, no doubt, but I’m biased. The Dark Knight is the reason that I got into comics, so anything dealing with Frank Miller’s Batman tends to command my attention.

In 2015, the most talked about character was:

I’ll say Batgirl. This year, the conversation was very focused on diversity in comics, and DC’s overhaul of the Batgirl series was an indicator that there is a new generation of readers out there, both young and female. Published reports have told us that female comic readership is growing leaps and bounds. The same thing is happening in the world of gaming.

For the record: I am for it. Come one, come all.

Other significant women in 2015 comics included Spider-Verse characters Spider-Gwen, Silk, and Spider-Woman. Jessica Jones is definitely in the conversation now, what with the Netflix series happening, and Marvel reissuing her comic in print. Alias is one of my personal favorites that Marvel has ever put out. Thank you, Mr. Bendis and Mr. Gaydos.

As an aside, I’ll just throw out a plug for Blackman and Del Mundo’s Elektra series, which was one of my favorite books of 2015. Looooooooved it.

In 2016, we’ll be talking about (character):

Discussion will heat up around Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, as Marvel Studios will inevitably be ramping up production for her movie. There will likely be shake-ups and surprises in Carol’s comic-verse, things that will get fans talking.

Personally, I’m intrigued with DC Comics/Warner Brothers’ upcoming Suicide Squad movie, which will be putting the spotlight on characters that are pretty unknown to the general public. It’s quite a thing seeing a character like Enchantress on the cover of Empire magazine. Maybe we’ll get an Enchantress comic, as a result.

Somebody out there will complain about that, movies driving the direction of the comics, but it is what it is. I’m just glad that comics are influential and driving the larger culture.

I vow in 2016, I will finally:

Teach the cats to scoop it themselves.

3 things that will be popular in 2016:

1. I’m hoping creator-owned titles will continue gaining traction in the marketplace. We need to keep the well fresh, so I would encourage fans to seek out and support indies, and give new creators and new titles a chance.

2. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw more merging of digital with print. I did that in 2015, when I debuted the print edition of the Bloodworth comic that I did with artist Chris Fenoglio. The print book came equipped with Augmented Reality content that you view with your tablet or smartphone. If the public embraces this sort of technology as a supplement to print, it could give creators more options for presenting their stories.

3. I have so many friends that are making a huge impression on the world of comics and pop culture journalism, such as Jenna Busch at Legion of Leia, Audrey Kearns at Geek Girl Authority, Barbra and Bryant Dillon at Fanboy Comics, and AJ Herrera and crew at Forbidden Panel. There has been a major revolution in pop culture over the past few years, and folks like them are really leading the way.

My biggest project for 2016 is:

To expand my Bloodworth series, and continue to introduce products that will merge print with digital media. Also, I have plans for my Image books Moriarty and Red City.
