Future Routes For Brian K. Vaughan's Paper Girls

by Vince Brusio

It's a series that was the winner of the 2015 Diamond Gem Awards, which are selected by comic book specialty retailers. It's also picked up an Eisner Award for "Best New Series," with its artist/co-creator Cliff Chiang also picking up a trophy for "Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team." The series is called Paper Girls, published by Image Comics, and it's the brain child of writer Brian K Vaughan. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Vaughan recently, and pick his brain over the new book, as Paper Girls #10 (AUG160651) comes to comic shops on October 5th, and marks the end of the second story arc.

Read below what Brian had to say about his latest creative endeavor!

***********

The first arc of Paper Girls was set entirely in 1988, but with our second storyline, Cliff and I wanted to do something unexpected and launch our young heroines into a strange and terrifying future … the year 2016. One of our delivery girls learns some life-changing news about her ultimate fate, and another even has the opportunity to meet and interact with a 40-year-old version of herself. I just turned 40 this July, so this story was definitely very personal to me.

Cliff and I were excited to explore how kids like us, who were raised in the late 80s, might react to our present. Sure, it’s disappointing that there are no jetpacks or moon bases in the 21st century, but I’m certain that my younger self would be absolutely astounded by some of the technological, social and political developments that too many of us take for granted. He’d probably also be scared and confused by many aspects of his older self, which is something we didn’t want to shy away from in this story.

This arc was also our opportunity to show off the kind of grand spectacle that comics can still do better than television or even a big Hollywood blockbuster, as Cliff showed with his super-sized tardigrades destroying much of Downtown Cleveland. Cliff certainly earned his Best Artist trophy at this year’s Eisner Awards, and it was a tremendous honor to have our book named "Best New Series" at the ceremony, as well. All credit to colorist Matt Wilson and letterer Jared K. Fletcher.

We’re as tight a quartet as the protagonists of our book, and I hope to get to ride with this crew for years to come.
