Article Image b6f2PREVIEWSworld: What is Skybourne #1 (JUL161320) about? Is there a special meaning behind the name itself?

Frank Cho: The Skybourne story is something I thought of over 10 years ago. It’s the story of Thomas Skybourne, an immortal tired of his everlasting life, who goes on a search for a mystic weapon, Excalibur, that could kill him. In the opening scene, Skybourne is seen falling from the sky (he jumped out of plane without a parachute), his latest attempt at ending his life. So the name Skybourne has a double meaning: It describes his divine origin and the opening scene of the story.

PREVIEWSworld: What was the initial inspiration behind the idea for this series?

Frank Cho: I love movies, especially monster movies. I wanted to write and draw stories about monsters, myths, and legends with a modern sensibility. So there will be a lot of pulp magazine-inspired action with amazing visuals and a healthy dose of humor.

PREVIEWSworld: Can you break down the main characters in this series and tell us a little about each?

Frank Cho: Two thousand years ago, after his divine resurrection, Lazarus had three children: Abraham, Thomas, and Grace. All three children were gifted with super strength, an indestructible body, and immortality. This is the story of Thomas and Grace, and their battle against Merlin who wants to destroy humanity. (I have a different story for Abraham down the road.) The whole series is a cross between Indiana Jones and Highlander.

PREVIEWSworld: Even though this is set in modern day, the bad guy here is Merlin, and the sword featured in the story is Excalibur. Can readers expect to see other legendary Arthurian references as the story unfolds?

Frank Cho: The Merlin character in this story is the Merlin from the original early literatures—he’s a child of nature and bit of a wild man. There will be dragons, knights, and Excalibur, but I won’t delve too much into the Arthurian legend.

PREVIEWSworld: How is this project different from some of your other creator-owned projects?

Frank Cho: This is one of the few stories I wrote that have a concrete beginning and end. This story came to me fully formed. And it’s also one of the most cinematic stories I’ve envisioned.

PREVIEWSworld: What would you like to say to fans to encourage them to try Skybourne?

Frank Cho: If you like monsters, ancient legends, history, and a fun, action-packed story, this is the book for you. Think of Indiana Jones with monsters!
